Things that make me smile and things that make me swear

Things that have, very recently, made me swear like a treeplanter:

  • stepping on a thumbtack and getting it stuck in the ball of my foot
  • walking into our farm with abe the babe and seeing fresh deer droppings everywhere
    • realizing that the deer droppings were made of our collards and kale, our broccoli and beets, our pac choy and peas and parsley and potatoes (yes, potatoes are poisonous. The deer STILL ate them, and not once, but twice), our chard and carrots, and my spirit
    • realizing that the deer that had made the droppings hadn’t jumped our fence, but had BASHED their way through it

Things that have, very recently, made me smile like whatever makes you smile:

  • our new (to us, but quite old to the world) ORANGE porch couch
  • the copious amounts of plum fruit leather we’re dehydrating
  • the drywall on our ceiling
  • visits from so many of our friends and family
  • our chickens!  they’re even snuggling up to each other at night
  • winning first prize in the Denman Island Blackberry Faire for knitting (my first blue ribbon!)
  • eating 100% local meals
  • buying a bow string for Jer’s bow the day the deer decimated our gardens
  • replicating knitted items for friends made by their grandparents
  • sitting down and reading a book and knitting on our new porch couch while soaking my very tender foot
  • late afternoon lake swims with friends and family
  • bubbly water, gin, and blackberry mojito jam that didn’t set
  • comments from all of you
